There are 2 ways to use the passive test mode:

  • A directed passive test, using the breath sampling cup
  • A drink sniffer test using the Drink/Headspace Sniffer attachment

A directed passive test
This passive test mode allows the operator to screen many people quickly for the presence of alcohol, without the need for a mouthpiece.

  1. First you will need to attach the breath sampling cup to the device, by aligning the holes over the inlet port and snapping into place
  2. Now press the On and Off buttons together to bring up the menu
  3. RCL will show on the screen as the 1st menu option, press the On button to scroll through the menu until you see PAS. Then press the Off button to select this passive testing mode
  4. The device will now show the operating temperature and then flash PAS
  5. Hold the device a few inches away from the donor and ask them to blow into the cup, until you ask them to stop. You will hear a click indicating there is enough sample to run the test. The device will have a dash running across the display signalling that it is analysing the sample
  6. The device will then show NEG, if no alcohol is detected or POS if alcohol has been detected
  7. If alcohol is detected at this point, you can carry out a direct test to establish how much alcohol is present
  8. To repeat a passive test with another donor, press the on button and repeat

A drink sniffer test

  1. First you will need to attach the Drink/Headspace Sniffer attachment

  3. With the device flashing PAS, hold the device above the container, glass or bottle, for best results agitate the liquid to release the gas in the headspace
  4. Press the On button with your trigger or index finger to take a manual sample from the headspace. You will hear a click indicating there is enough sample to run the test. The device will have a dash running across the display signalling that it is analysing the sample
  5. The device will then show NEG, if no alcohol is detected or POS if alcohol has been detected
  6. Any positive sample would need to be sent to a lab for confirmation
  7. To repeat a passive test with another container, press the on button and repeat
